PROMPT: Write a short story or poem about rain.

Rain is one of the most vital weather phenomena that keeps our world going. It renews. It brings life. It washes things clean.

When I was very little, I was afraid of thunder and lightning. My Mom taught me how to count between the lightning strike and the actual thunder clap to determine how far away it was, so I wouldn’t be scared any longer. I would watch from my grandparents porch as lightning rippled across the sky, putting on a glorious show. I would also go to sleep listening to the sound of the rain drops coming down on the tin that covered where my grandparents large picture window jutted out from the house. It was rhythmic and it would lull my eyes to close in slumber.

I can smell rain coming — it is, in fact, my favorite smell, much like any body of water. Every type of body of water has its own distinct smell, and rain is no different, it just happens to be traveling to me in a cloud!

I am so taken in awe at the power and fury of storms. They are both beautiful and mysterious. If I didn’t have children, I’d probably be a storm chaser!

Ironically, since I was a little girl, my mother had a music box, with a picture of A Hummel boy and girl, under an umbrella, that played “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head.” I even had the 45 record of that song, by BJ Thomas:

… Raindrops are falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

… So I just did me some talking to the sun
And I said I didn’t like the way he got things done
Sleeping on the job
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

… But there’s one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me
Won’t defeat me, it won’t be long
Till happiness steps up to greet me

… Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying’s not for me
‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I’m free
Nothing’s worrying me

… It won’t be long till happiness steps up to greet me

… Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying’s not for me
‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I’m free
Nothing’s worrying me
