Financial abuse can be and is a huge part of domestic abuse — so much so, that when a victim gets out of DV, finances was one of the many things that kept them stuck within that abusive situation. Abusers are geniuses at getting us to believe that we WILL NOT financially be able to do it without them, but what I found out when I got out was this: while I did not have as much “combined” income coming in, I was actually better off because I streamlined my expenses to only vital expenses, and not as much money was wasted; plus, for a time, the judge demanded he pay child support to me. I found that I acutally had MORE money. When money fell short with my current full-time job, I could take on an additional part-time gig without rebuke and in total safety (ALL in MY control)! It was very liberating!
Some survivors STILL have a hard time with finances, especially if you were never allowed to assist or contribute, due to the power and control issues. Financial stressors can cause A LOT of anxiety, so as a survivor you want to take control of it comfortably. Sound familiar? If so, THIS site is for you.
In my social services job, it seems as though schools AND parents are not teaching children to be financially responsible and pro-active, as my parents had. I remember in math class in sixth grade, learning how checks and a checkbook register worked, getting scenarios and making a budget, and shopping within a budget with mock grocery store ads and coupons. I don’t remember my teacher’s name, but I remembered what I learned. I was fortunate enough to learn from my parents sound financial practices also, so I tried to mirror them as much as I could apply it to my own married life. Many, many folks do not have that luxury. That is where Clever Girl Financial is an asset!
